Jessica "Jess" Joy Delaney is one of the main characters of the Mother-Daughter Book Club. She is on the cover of the first book, and as you can see, she is ugly and lonely and that probably why her mom left, and why she gets bullied.

Early Life[]

Jess was born in December 1995. Her parents are Shannon and Michael Delaney. She has twin brothers, Dylan and Ryan Delaney. She was born at Half Moon Farm and grew up with the plants and animals and trees and is especially close to her mother. Her only friend and best friend for a long time was Emma Hawthorne.

Appearance[]

Jess has "gorgeous thick blonde hair" which she wears in a braid down her back. She is teased by Becca for having hay in her hair sometimes. Her eyes are deep blue and she is very thin and short, in book two she is described as “a wisp of a thing” and in the seventh book, described as barely reaching 5 feet as her father would say she is "five foot nothing". She has very long eyelashes and thick bangs. When Jess is a camp counselor after senior year, she gets skunk'd and her hair is cut very short.

Personality[]

Jess has a passion for all animals, singing, and science. She is very shy but we see her confidence grow and her shyness decrease as she has to perform in the sixth grade musical, audition for solo's, and defend herself and make friends in a new school. She is often teased (not in a mean way) for being a goody two shoes, she always tries to keep the girls from pulling pranks on the mean girls defending them and coming up with reasons for their bad behavior.

Family[]

Mrs. Delaney (Jess's Mom)[]

Her mother was absent for the first book because she ran off to New York to act as a main character in a soap opera in the first book, taking one of their dogs with her. She never meant to hurt anyone, she had the family's best interests at heart, farming doesn't bring in a lot of revenue. Jess's dad was on supported her decision, only wanting her to be happy, but Jess missed her terribly and started to believe the rumors spreading. She came home at the end of first book and later told Jess that even though acting was her dream she loved her family and loved the farm and didn't want to be anywhere else although she did start acting for a local theater later on in the series. Mrs. Delany was a welcome addition to the book club joining the motherly forces when the girls got in trouble and helping to patch up any disputes amongst the mothers as well as with the kids.

Mr. Delany (Jess's Dad)[]

Jess's dad is a very supportive husband loving dad, and dedicated farmer. When Mrs. Delaney left town he stepped in and comforted Jess and tried to be a fill- in mom for Jess and even took her to the mother daughter book club meetings. He even hosted one of the Book clubs at their house and tried to make it perfect although it ended in disaster. He tried his best to cheer her on through Sixth grade and until her mom came home not complaining once, ignoring rumors and keeping on top of the business.

Dylan and Ryan Delaney ( Jess's brothers[]

Dylan and Ryan, Jess' younger twin brothers show to be a pain to the whole Delaney family, as twins are quite a workload, but they prove to shape up as they grow up and take responsibility at the farm, just as Jess did before she left to go to the boarding school Colonial Academy.

Friends[]

Emma Hawthorne[]

Emma is Jess's best friend. When they were in middle school, they hung out frequently and baking cookies, having sleepovers, and talking about everything. They knew each other's emotions and understood when something wasn't right. Even though Emma and Jess' relationship is a friendship that lasts over many years, it has its hardships, just like any friendship. One of their biggest fights took place when all of the Delaneys and Emma travel to New Hampshire to visit Jess' aunt and uncle, Emma and Jess are shown to be bitter to be towards one another at times as they differing views over Jess's cousin Felicia. While in New Hampshire, Emma also believes Jess is flirting with a farmhand who works at Half Moon Farm, Josh. This rift between the girls proves to be insignificant over their long span of friendship.

Becca Chadwick[]

Jess and Becca do not get along well in 6th grade, as Becca constantly teases Jess, calling her "Goat Girl," which proves to be a trigger point in Jess and Becca's relationship even throughout high school. Jess, along with Emma, call Becca the "queen bee," as she seems to be the leader of her clique in sixth grade, the Fab Four. Later in the series, Jess also develops a new name for Becca: Chadwickius Frenemus. This is a play on Latin names for plants and animals. Jess chooses this name for Becca, chadwickius particularly because that is her "species" (her last name is Chadwick) and frenemus because Becca can be somewhat of a frenemy sometime. Although they also share great memories with the book club and get along well once they learn to put they past behind them, to forgive and forget.

Megan Wong[]

Since Megan was part of Becca Chadwick’s crew both of them did not get along with each other for a while. Megan hurt Emma and since Jess is so loyal an enemy of Emma's equals and enemy of Jess's. At the end of the 1st book they suddenly realized they had started to become great friends because Megan stuck up for Jessica’s brothers. They never particularly fought with each other, Jess is such a likable person, so they never had issues arise with each other.

Cassidy Sloane[]

Cassidy and Jess are good friends after they started the book club. Cassidy always stuck up for Jess like she did all the other girls, if one was picked on, you'd better believe Cassidy will get the bully back no matter what. They are not super close like she is with Emma, but good friends.

Zach Norton[]

Jess and Zach were great friends after the production of Beauty and the Beast. They now they call each other Beauty or Beast.

Relationships[]

Darcy Hawthorne[]

Throughout the whole series Jess only had one major crush, Darcy Hawthorne. This crush developed somewhere around fourth grade when suddenly Darcy looked, well, good. Unfortunately being the shy person Jess is she would go stiff and revert back ing to her shy shell and basically couldn't act cool whenever her arrived, never said the right thing and she always practically kicked herself for it. This crush was one of the things Jess kept from Emma and everyone else for the longest time. However everyone new about it towards the end of the 4th book. After Jess left for boarding school she barley got to see Darcy and always asked Emma about him convinced that she would never be good enough and her dreams of him would never come true. However on a sleep over with Emma, Emma told hr that Darcy had asked about her at least twice and even asked if there was something between her and Zach, Emma said no which gave Jess hope. One slight hiccup occurred in her plan though, she had just gotten up the nerve to ask him to a dance at Colonial academy when her stinky roommate Savannah beat her to it, ruining the moment she had and also her opinion of Savannah. After pulling information out of Emma and Savannah about how the dance went she found out Darcy didn't like Savannah. The next year Darcy left the country with his family and on her visit with the rest of the book club to england they confessed their feelings and boom the rest is history. Darcy is a great boyfriend good enough to make even his sister jealous of how well he treats Jess.
